What are bedbugs?

Bed bugs are little bugs that feed off the blood of mammals – usually ours! In most cases homes get infected with these parasites when people come back from a vacation where they slept in an infected bed.

In terms of size, they can grow up to the size of an apple seed, while color wise, adults are brown, but if they consume some blood, their color will change to reddish brown – maybe nearly black.

The young bugs are the size of a pinhead and are gold or white until they get the chance to feed. If you have been bitten by bed bugs, you should address the issue with proper care by visiting a doctor.

Signs of bed bugs

After you get bitten by bedbugs, your skin will feel itchy and turn red. These bugs usually leave rows of bed bugs bites, compared to other insects which just leave bites here and there.

The good news is that most bed bug bites can be treated at home. Even though it may be itchy, people should never scratch the bug bites, as this will only make things much worse.

The pain and itching can be eased by using calamine lotion. In some cases though, the bites will become swollen and that is why people will need to think about using a cold compress or an ice pack in order to calm the swelling. If quickly treated with a cold pack, the redness will improve.

Bed bugs are spreading!

These nasty bugs have spread right across the United States. In Canada recently, it was in the news that a courtroom had become infested. In the UK, there have also been reports of increased bed bug activity.

Bed bugs are infesting locations worldwide. Over time they have become immune to the various chemicals meant to kill them – this means that more powerful chemicals are needed to deal with an outbreak.

They can be found in hotel rooms, brought in by an earlier guest, then they easily move along to new homes with the next visitors’ clothing and luggage. Due the increase in overseas travel, they have spread far and wide and are now quite difficult to kill.

They are hard to find as they only come out at night. The bugs love hiding in crevices and cracks like mattress seams, in picture frames, behind the baseboard, in furniture, sheets and so on.

It has nothing to do with hygiene – all hotels, from 1 star to 5 stars – will get these bugs so paying more does not mean you will get a bug-free stay.

How to get rid of bed bugs the hard way…

Although getting bed bugs does not mean that your house is dirty, you can control them by regular cleaning. Check your home carefully while keeping in mind that adult bugs are visible to the eye. Use a bright flash light and inspect all areas of your home, especially the bedrooms. A bed bug will leave a reddish brown spot on the mattress and also a specific smell, so be on the lookout for these details. Don’t leave anything unturned as these bugs can literally hide everywhere. In some cases, you might even have to take the bed frames apart.

Bed linens will need to be washed daily if the home has been infested. Blankets, sheets and pillows should be washed using a hot cycle and, when drying them, choose a high heat setting for the dryer. You will also need to vacuum the entire floor area of your home to increase the chances of getting rid of the bugs.

To simply kill them off, you will need to consider a special pest control service and that costs a lot.
